Lost Season 1 Episode1

Jack

  • Peole-oriented behaviors

  • Theory Y

  • Authoritarian

In this episode, Jack demonstrates many people-oriented behaviors, for instance, when he sees the crashed airplane and injured people, the first thing he does is observing the situation and people. He tries to see what is going on and examines who need help most, prioritize, and then take actions which are needed depending on the situation. He also encourages and coaches others. When he asks Kate to stitch his wound, he first asks her if she has had any sewing experience, and asks what he wants her to do. He knows it is crazy thing to ask; thus, he makes her recall a successful memory to give her confidence. Moreover, he tells her "you can do this" or "you're doing fine". Another his behavior which is people-oriented is that when Jack is trying to help a lazy who was unconscious with Boone, he listen to his opinion which is to stick a pen in the throat even if he is knowledgeable doctor and he does not think Boone should be licensed lifeguard because Jack saw him doing the wrong thing to the lady at the beginning. Throughout the episode, Jack ask othersto do things such as including helping him out. When he asks Hugo to watch the preoregnant lady who may give a birth in any minute while he is helping other people, Hugo is shocked about what he is just asked, and says "oh, you gotta be kidding me.." Jack thinks everyone seeks responsibility, and that is why he does not hesitate to ask people things even it is very scary and heavy duties.

The Pilot

  • Task-oriented Behaviors

His behavior is absolutely task-oriented. When he recovers consciousness, he just keeps gathering information, such as how many people survived, how long it has been since the airplane crashed, and if anyone has come to rescue them. Then he starts explaining what happens to the airplane even if he is not asked to clarify the situation where they are now.

Jin

  • Task-oriented Behaviors

  • Theory X

Jin is also described as task-oriented. His task is to protect his wife and himself even if other people may hurt. He tells his wife that she does not have to worry other only important thing for them is staying together and survive. His behaviors also show that it is under Theory X. He thinks his wife must be directed and coerced to perform. "You must not leave my sight", and "You must follow wherever I go" , these lines are example of his theory X behaviors. He does not allow his wife to say a word.

Boone

  • Participative

Boone is not a character who leads other, but if he gets tasks to do he get them done. He shows that behavior when he is asked to find a pen by Jack, even if he is in a chaotic situation, he manages to bring him not only one pen but many pens to make sure Jack can choose the right one to save a lady's live.
